Debt collection that protects customer relationships
Why early, polite and persistent contact recovers more money than aggressive tactics, and how to design a collections programme that customers will respect.

On this page
Most overdue payments are not deliberate. Cards expire, invoices go to the wrong person, people forget, or a customer is going through a hard month. Treating every late payer as a bad actor damages relationships with customers who would have paid anyway.
A better approach is firm, fair and respectful, and it usually recovers more.
Contact early
The earlier you make contact, the more you recover. Pre-due reminders and early-stage follow-ups solve most problems before they grow: a new card, a corrected invoice address or a short payment plan.
Use the right channels in the right order
Plan a sequence across phone, SMS, email and WhatsApp. A friendly reminder message first, then a call, then follow-ups at agreed intervals. Respect rules on contact times and frequency.
Make paying easy
Give customers a simple way to pay during the conversation, such as a secure payment link or mobile money where relevant. Agents should never need to see full card numbers.
Offer plans within clear limits
Some customers can pay, but not all at once. Agents should be able to offer payment plans within limits you approve, and record every promise to pay.
Handle hardship properly
When a customer is in genuine difficulty or vulnerable, the right response is to pause contact and escalate according to your hardship policy. This protects the customer and your reputation.
Know where the line is
Outsourced collections teams handle pre-due reminders and early and mid-stage collections. Accounts that need legal action are returned to you or your legal partner.
Measure what matters
| Measure | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Contact rate | How many customers you actually reach |
| Promises to pay | Agreements made |
| Kept promises | Agreements honoured |
| Recovered by account age | Where effort pays off |
Daily reporting on promises and cash collected keeps everyone focused.
B2B collections
For business customers, collections often look like account management: chasing invoices, resolving disputes, correcting billing errors and keeping ledgers up to date. The same principles apply: early, polite and persistent.
